A New Sprouting
January 26, 2009 5:27 PMMy horoscope for this year predicted wealth and growth, particularly in career and education-related matters. All of the horoscopes I read promised me those things and I checked from different sources too. Not that I’m an avid believer in these things…they just happened to be passed on to me. Almost a month into the new year, I have yet to see any advancements anywhere, unless you count the increasing workload and the expanding hole in my wallet.
The year started off well enough…on New Year’s eve, I invited a group of close friends over for a cozy get-together dinner. We ordered roasted turkey with chestnut stuffing and gravy, grilled chipolatas, and Jane made mashed potatoes. We also had buttered steamed carrots and button sprouts. It was a perfect last-meal-of-the-year, with the exception of the sprouts, which were a tad overcooked. Still, I would’ve felt like something was missing if we had excluded the sprouts. After all, how can my predicament come true if I don’t start with a little “sprout” into the new year?

Sautéed Button Sprouts
(Makes 8 servings)
- 1 bag (about 1 kg.) frozen button sprouts
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 pack (about 8 rashers) smoked bacon, sliced into small strips
- 1 Tbsp. butter
- cracked black pepper and sea salt to taste
Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the button sprouts for around 2 minutes or until just soft. Blanch in ice water. After they’ve cooled, halve the button sprouts.
In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat and sauté the onions and bacon until they start to turn a light golden brown. Add the sprouts and toss gently.
