Sandy Beaches and Yellow Chicken
September 3, 2006 4:59 PMNow that K is finally here in Bangkok and KA triple J are reunited once again (after not seeing A for 5 years), our trip to Pattaya can finally start (but too bad little J had to stay behind to work). Pattaya is popular among foreigners for its night entertainment and it is a two-hour drive from Bangkok. Pattaya’s beaches may not be the cleanest in Thailand but it beats some other places and it’s probably the best option for you if you’re craving a trip to a decent beach where you can find cheap accommodation, an array of food and endless activities ranging from bungee-jumping to the famous Alcazar cabaret shows but be warned – these are not real “women” (I’ve personally never been to one).

One thing my friends and I always do when we go to Pattaya is to eat “yellow chicken” by the sea. We always stay at Jomtien beach (the beach on the other side of Pattaya) rather than around Pattaya beach, mainly because my mom owns a condominium there and because the beach is nicer. Tables and reclining beach chairs are shaded by big umbrellas that scatter the beaches and vendors with carts selling seafood, yellow chicken, fruits and other foods line the streets.

Would you like some som tam to go with your yellow chicken?
Renting a chair costs 20-30 baht per person and a menu is brought over where customers can order food from the cart vendors. The yellow chicken my friends and I love so much is marinated with turmeric powder, and you can choose which part of the chicken you want and the vendor will reheat it for you on the grill before coming over to serve you on the beach. The chicken is served with sweet chicken sauce and ok, it’s not gourmet or anything but somehow, when you’re lounging on the beach with the gentle sea breeze blowing your way, it’s the atmosphere that makes whatever you eat taste great (especially if you’ve just woken up from a lazy morning, are starving, and so are 3 other people)!
